What is ESWT and how does it work?
Pressure wave technology also known as shockwave or EPAT (Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment) is an FDA approved treatment modality that delivers non-invasive low frequency acoustic sound waves into the painful area of the body. It is the most advanced, non-invasive and highly effective treatment method which enhances blood circulation and accelerates the healing process, thus causing damaged tissue to gradually regenerate and heal. At the Heel Pain Centers of South Florida, the Board Certified Podiatrists use the Storz D-Actor 100 which is the newest and most advanced technology available.
What do studies show?
More than 80% of patients who have failed to respond to any other treatment are relieved of their pain after being treated with ESWT. ESWT therapy studies have seen resounding success rates: a 90% success rate for heel pain (Foot and Ankle International, 2012) and a 76% success rate for Achilles pain (The American Journal of Sports Medicine, 2007). ESWT studies show with shockwave treatment you are able to continue normal activities during your treatment period. World class institutions currently using this technology are Cleveland Clinic, John Hopkins University, Mount Sinai Hospital, Duke University, Hospital of Special Surgery New York and Montreal General Hospital. Additionally, most professional sports teams utilize shockwave technology to treat their athletes.
How is ESWT performed?
Optimal results usually require 3 treatments at weekly intervals, but relief of symptoms may be experienced after just one session with optimal results reported at 12 weeks post treatment. Patients can return to work and exercise, often with immediate reduction of pain levels. All treatments are performed by our Board Certified Podiatrists. The doctor applies a coupling-gel to the affected area and administers the pressure wave via the applicator by moving over the affected area in a circular motion. During the treatment there may be some minor discomfort and pain.
What are the expected results?
The non-surgical therapy eliminates pain and restores full mobility, thus improving your quality of life. Over 80% of patients treated report being pain free an/or having significant pain reduction.
Is it safe?
Yes. This FDA approved advanced technology was developed in Europe and is currently used around the globe. Our practice utilizes the world’s most sophisticated shockwave equipment. Manufactured in Switzerland by world – renowned Storz Medical, with 75 years of medical research and development, ESWT is considered the gold standard in shockwave technology.
Who should not have ESWT?
ESWT should not be used in patients who have deep venous thrombosis or malignancy. It is also best to avoid the procedure if you are taking blood thinners.
What are the contraindications of ESWT treatment?
Patients who choose ESWT treatment should not take NSAIDS (including ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Naproxen, Aleve, and Aspirin) for two weeks prior to and one month after the administration of ESWT, as they interfere with the hormones that regenerate your cells.
