4 Tips for Healthy Feet This Summer

With spring in full swing and summer fast approaching, are your feet prepared? It’s important to keep your feet healthy so you aren’t sidelined with an easily preventable foot or ankle problem as the weather continues to improve.

Rather than needlessly injuring yourself because you aren’t prepared, here are 4 tips that you can use so your feet are ready for the everyday wear and tear that comes with the nice weather:

Wear Adjustable Footwear

Hot summer weather will cause your feet to swell more than usual, so it is a great idea to wear shoes and sandals with a variety of strapping and lacing options so you can make quick adjustments as needed to redistribute any stress or pressure points, providing fast relief.

Limit Flip-Flop Use

While this might be difficult living in Floria, you should also try to limit the amount of time you spend in flip-flops. Despite their comfort, frequently wearing flip-flops can have adverse effects on your feet. Why? Because we actually walk differently in flip-flops compared to regular gym shoes. This change in gait can create stress in different parts of the foot and body.

Shop for Shoes at the End of the Day

It’s very important that your shoes fit properly and provide adequate support. Shoes that are too tight can cause a wide range of foot problems, so be sure to try on shoes later in the day to account for any normal swelling that may have occurred. Also, try to have your feet measured once a year. As you get older your feet have a tendency to get wider and flatter. Also, weight loss or gain can have a pronounced effect on your shoe size, so get those feet accurately measured!

Proper Arch Support

One of the easiest and most effective methods of correcting problems with your feet, knees, hips, and back is to have your walking gait analyzed by your foot doctor. When our arches drop or roll we tend to compensate by altering the way we walk, which can have a profound effect on your health all the way up your spine. Be sure to be fitted with proper arch supports and any other necessary orthotic inserts that can keep your feet, and the rest of your back, properly aligned.
